Brazilian Festival & Capoeira Encounter

Whether you want to spend a night at the theater, participate in a dance or percussion workshop, or attend a capoeira batizado, you can find it at CAOBA’s Brazilian Festival and Capoeira Encounter.   Our next festival will be held April 14-17, 2011.

On April 15, 2010, the award-winning dance company, Viver Brasil, will perform " Feet on the Ground" at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, NJ.

Feet on the Ground features a program comprised of “Avanhia”, a ceremonial meditation on the forces of nature; “The Three Wives of Xangô”, an epic love story between deities; “Alaafia”, a tribute to harmonious living; “Samba de Caboclo/Roots Wild”, an homage to Brazil’s indigenous people and their spirits; “In Motion”, incorporating Samba de Roda, Capoeira and modern dance; and “Onile’s Smiling Daughters/Tribute to Carnaval Queens”, a rousing finale, with ecstatic solo and group Samba Reggae, all performed to sensual and thunderous Surdo beats. Audiences will be intoxicated, feel the earth tremble, and exit the theater as jubilant witnesses.

The festival will also offer Brazilian dance and percussion workshops. Get in the mood and know some of the dances and music before attending the show. These classes are offered on Thursday evening, April 14th, percussion class at 6:30pm and the dance class at 8:15pm. They will be held at 64 South Washington Ave, Bergenfield, NJ 07621. School Performance & Workshop Series

The Cultural Association of Brazilian Arts’ School Workshop and Performance Series brings interdisciplinary, cultural programming to schools in the NJ-NY area.   CAOBA has performed capoeira in front of K-12 and college student/teacher audiences as large as 800 and has taught capoeira workshops to groups ranging from 10 to 100 participants.

History:   Students learn about the origins of capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian art form developed during slavery in Brazil.   Capoeira was developed by Brazilian slaves who practiced self-defense techniques from Africa and blended them with dance and music in an effort to disguise their practices from slave owners while continuing their traditions.

Music:   If it’s Brazilian, it must have rhythm!   The main instruments of capoeira are the atabaque (a drum), the pandeiro (tambourine), and the berimbau (a percussion instrument with a single string and a gourd).   Capoeira movements are done to the rhythm of the music, and the type of rhythm played indicates the kind of capoeira game played in the circle.   The berimbau player sings a song, and the rest of the participants in the circle join in the call-and-response.   Student workshops allow student to try the instruments as well as learning simple songs.   Capoeira songs are about history, slavery, capoeira masters, love, and more

Physical Education:   Capoeira gets students moving!   A typical workshop begins with a stretch and warm-up to Brazilian music.   Capoeira movements are introduced and practiced individually and with partners.   Finally, students can demonstrate what they learned in a roda, the circle in which a capoeira game is played.   Practice of capoeira develops strength, flexibility, agility, and balance.   Students also learn simple principles on exercise and how to make healthy choices in their daily lives.

Foreign Language:   Tem dendê, tem dendê, capoeira tem dendê.”    Students learn songs, numbers, movement names, and simple commands in Portuguese.

Character Education:   As students participate in CAOBA’s programs they develop respect for another culture, respect for each other and confidence as they all try something new and challenging.   Teamwork   is essential as they encourage each other and work together to create rhythm.   Discipline is improved as they must focus to learn technique.
